Getting back on track with rail transport

On the evening of 3 February 2003, a suburban electric train reached the end of its run at Broadmeadows station, north of Melbourne. The driver began to shut down the controls in his cab, but something distracted him and he failed to complete the procedure correctly. This in turn allowed the brakes to slowly release.

Three minutes later, the driver emerged from the Gents to see his train creeping out of the station. He gave chase; the train won. After clearing the platform, the almost imperceptible incline soon became steeper, and the train began to accelerate. About 15 hair-raising minutes later, after reaching speeds in excess of 100 km/h, it crashed into a waiting Bacchus Marsh train at Spencer Street station, now called Southern Cross, in the heart of the city. Fortunately there were no fatalities or major injuries.
