Heritage rail trail

Posted in South Australian Rail News on 2018-03-05 13:42:52

Broken Hill, Peterborough, and Port Pirie councils have banded together in an act to promote the history of the heritage rail trail, which runs through the red dirt of Broken Hill and finishes at the Spencer Gulf.

ICONIC heritage buildings along the Casino to Murwillumbah rail line would be leased to private operators to run cafes and other tourism businesses under the proposed $75.5 million rail trail, Ballina MP Don Page said.

There are 24 original stations along the line including main stops at Murwillumbah, Burringbar, Mullumbimby, Byron Bay, Bangalow, Eltham, Lismore and Casino.

The rail trail would provide a track for walking and riding bikes and/or horses along the existing rail corridor, providing a safe and scenic route without steep hills between Northern Rivers towns.

A TRANSFORMATION of abandoned railway lines into desirable cycling getaways is more than a pipedream.

That’s the view of McComas Taylor, the convenor of a newly formed group aiming to drum up support for rail-trail cycling – a cross-country discipline permitted in every Australian state bar New South Wales.

A cyclist of more than 40 years, Mr Taylor says a rail trail circuit from Goulburn to Crookwell is ideal on multiple levels.

“I’ve seen how these things work in Victoria, I’ve ridden rail-trails there.

The Goulburn Crookwell Heritage Rail Trail presents an “Enormous Opportunity” for the area that could help deliver much needed benefits - and deal with all legitimate concerns of landholders.

The Molonglo Rail trail proposed for the disused Captains Flat railway received a boost with Country Labor Candidate for Monaro and Shadow Minister for Tourism, Steve Whan, saying a Labor Government will provide $50,000 to fund the feasibility work on the rail trail.
